Sometimes it just feels good to draw a monster. Simple. Joan Didion’s writing evokes liberalism at its prime, but a liberalism, for her at least, that is marbled through with a California noir sensibility. Manson, drought, wildfires, celebrity, Ronald Reagan, Huey Newton, Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek, the battle between right and left in CA politics, all of these are things that she touches on in her essays. And they all are written about with a melancholic hard edged subjectivity that marks the best, and most insightful, versions of noir whether in print – Raymond Chandler and Ross MacDonald – or in film – Billy Wilder or Ida Lupino. Theorytoons: Now Safe for Work. Anti-Oedipus by Deleuze and Guattari (1972) I liked the final panel from yesterday’s vintage Judge Parker comic strip so much that I gave it some flashy color. Pizazz. The rendering of his 1970’s haircut is pretty amazing. RIP Gianfranco Baruchello. I finally read this a month ago. Best self help book I’ve ever read. Lovely ideas on art and life. The Beast. Ugh. I guess I’m just a dupe for thinking The Large Glass is one of the greatest artworks of the 20th century. Possibly the greatest. Can we jump over the “breather” quotation occasionally? I agree that was a provocation. But not a simple one. Working on a couple of book projects. Here’s a warm up drawing, the kind I do to get moving. Some recent digital sketches. Really a test of the technology though. If you like, please like.
